Pentecost Squaw Valley 2014

What a great place 80 degrees dry and beautiful! Squaw Valley in summer is an awesome place with Lake Tahoe coming alive with boaters beach goers and bikers. Sabbath service was preceded by a Islamic Beast power seminar presented by Tony Bosserman, and a split sermon from David Antion and Tony Bosserman pastor Church of God 7th day Sacramento California. Pentecost Sunday service was also a preceded by a seminar by David Antion and another split By David and Tony. Each service was less than 2 hours and received very well by the audience.

Seminar – David Antion

Why people misunderstand.

It is impossible NOT to misunderstand some of the time.

We misunderstand because we use words which are inadequate.

It’s cold in here, he was a big guy.  What is cold and what is big?  Everyone has a different idea of cold or big.

We apply our own mental filters to what other people say to us.  They consist of our experiences, knowledge, traumas, hurts, expectations, desires, etc.

How do we minimize misunderstandings?

1). Make sure the message got there.

2). You need a feedback loop.  Clarify — this is what I heard.  Is this what you mean?

You don’t want people to hear a message that you didn’t intend to send.

Transderivational search — interpreting what someone else is saying.  “People don’t like me” and then you agree and give a bunch of specific examples.  Don’t start on your idea of what someone said.  Deal with specific statements, not general.

To understand the Bible, we need to understand background and customs.

We see the a Bible through our own filters and modern times.  Little children–back in the Bible children were humble and insignificant and now we elevate them.

Split Sermon Tony Bosserman

Acts 2:1-8
Chapter 2
The Coming of the Holy Spirit
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?

Several firsts took place:

1). The language barrier was broken for the first time in human history.  It was done in the hearing vs. the speaking so that everyone could hear the gospel message.

Genesis 11:1-7
Chapter 11
The Tower of Babel
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

Corruption spreads through language.

Acts 2:14-18
Peter’s Sermon at Pentecost
But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them:“Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:
“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;
even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.

2). First time the Holy Spirit was poured out in mass and setting people free.

Numbers 11:16-17
Elders Appointed to Aid Moses
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. And I will come down and talk with you there. And I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you may not bear it yourself alone.

Numbers 11:24-25
So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. And he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it.

Moses and the 70 elders had the Holy Spirit but the rest of the Israelites did not.

Romans 7:19-25
For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Romans 8:1-5
Chapter 8
Life in the Spirit
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

Focus on holiness and nurturing.

John 14:23
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

James 1:27
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

3). Prejudice was overcome.  Barriers between people were removed. All men and women regardless of their status had access to God.

Galatians 3:26-29
for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

Christianity is the only religion that teaches you to live your enemies.
